WHAT WE DO

The mentoring aspect of literacy promotion is the newest addition to the Racquet Readers. At first our main mission was simply to provide books to various organizations that would then put those materials to use. Feeling somewhat unsatisfied we switched our focus from supplying to mentoring. Although we are continuing our donations, we are beginning to set up mentoring programs with local schools in the Austin Area. Westwood High School was the first to join this endeavor and students from honor societies and clubs came out every week to read and play with kids at their designated recreational center. Each school that participates will have a Racquet Readers Club within the school to coordinate activities every week at their own rec center. Our goal is to get all of Austin reading!!

Mentoring
Book Collection

As a literacy promotion organization, we are always in need of books. We give thousands of books to CTTA and schools around Austin. We have book drives in neighborhoods and we do recieve generous donations, but we can use all the help we can get. Most children cannot read simply because they do not have access to reading material and the more books we provide the more children can benefit.

The Central Tennis Texas Association (NJTL), headed by Ms. Sarah Pernell, provides low-cost tennis lessons and services to underprivileged children around Austin and is the inspiration and sponsor for the Racquet Readers. It is a branch of the National Junior Tennis and Learning Association (NJTL) and provides valuable life lessons on and off the court year round. CTTA is a far reaching program and is always need of volunteers. If you love tennis, kids, or just want to help out, click on the volunteer button at the top of this page. We need all the help we can get. Thanks!!!
